Ugh, Stiles. HELP ME. It’s impossible for me to tell how much of his characterisation is just down to the awesomeness of Dylan O’Brien’s acting and how much of it is written in, but oh my goddddd. First of all the way we see him react to his father is wonderful. Like, Stiles is a billion times more mature and self-sacrificing than of the other school-age characters on the show. He looks after Scott (who, let’s face it, is dumber than a box of rocks), his dad, and anyone who is in danger from the various ridiculous perils that living in Beacon Hills seems to bring, even though compared to people like Derek and Scott he is most emphatically not a fighter. While Stiles is the Neville Longbottom of Teen Wolf, Scott is the Harry Potter who is always all THIS IS MY FAULT!! I HAVE TO SAVE EVERYONE!! But Stiles is the one who actually saves everyone. STILES IS THE ULTIMATE RAVENPUFF. And the way he looks out for his dad makes me DDD: to the max because Stiles is so open about the fact that he’s constantly afraid that he’ll lose his one remaining parent.
And Stiles and loneliness? IS THE WORST. First of all: Dylan O’Brien Gives Good Face. This is just a diamond-hard fact right there. But the way Teen Wolf portrays Stiles as a lonely teenager is so much better than, like, 99% of all lonely teenager characters on TV. Most teen shows try to emphasise how alienated the main characters are because all teens feel alienated etc etc etc but it usually comes off as false or overwrought, but with Stiles you get this kid who clearly loves his best friend so much and is supportive of his relationship while still being pretty openly envious of it. I mean, Scott isn’t a dick or anything, but he’s kinda thoughtless (cf: every time Scott switches off his phone while Stiles is calling him for help/kidnapped/needing info/drowning in a pool with a paralysed werewolf…). There’s been some word from the cast that Stiles is NEVER going to kiss anyone and/or get a girlfriend or boyfriend, which makes me swan-dive into an ocean of tears because a) Stiles needs someone to love him, and b) his crush on Lydia is a complete life-ruiner. I wish that Lydia/Stiles was a thing that could actually happen in this show, like Xander/Cordelia in BTVS, because Lydia really needs someone to love her as well, but I just… don’t think it’s ever gonna happen…
